When the bough breaks...

Today was a crazy day. I went to pick up Isabel from gymnastics. I took Taj with me and left Liv, Kelsea, Karlea and Alec home with Tristan. Liv was asleep, otherwise I would have taken her. After I picked up Iz, I went by the DMV to register my van. While I was there, it started raining. Hard. So, I called home. The phone rang and rang and the answering machine didn't pick up. So, I knew the electricity had gone out. Then the lites went out at the DMV. I ran out to the van in hail and rain with Taj and Iz. We started driving home and the rain let up and basically stopped. On the way home we saw 5-6 trees split in 1/2 or knocked over completely. One major street had a tree lying all the way across the street. I busted a U and went another route and came to another tree in the road. All this time I am trying to call home, but our phones are cordless, so they don't work when the electricity is out. I finally had to drive ON THE SIDEWALK to get around trees to get home. I finally get to the street leading to my neighborhood and there is a big electric line pole lying on top of a house of a family in our ward, along with a tree. I couldn't turn there, so I had to turn around to try the only other route into our neighborhood. By this time I'm bawling. Iz is crying. I was freakin' out on my cell phone talking to Sei. I was convinced the huge willow tree in our front yard had fallen ontop of the house. I went around the other way only to find it too was blocked by an electricline pole lying across the road and ontop of Isabel's primary teacher's house!! A woman in our ward saw me and said, "They won't let you thru here." I started crying saying "My kids are home alone and I can't get a hold of them!!" I parked my van and started walking withTaj and Iz when a man stopped me and said they were trying to clear a path for cars along the 1st road I had taken. I got in my van and went around and was able to finally get home!! During this time I also called my neighbor's cell phone and found out all the kids were at her house. Thank God!! Our neighborhood is trashed. And all this happened in a less than 10 minutes. It was what they call a "microburst." Kinda like a mini-tornado in one little area. Maybe an 8 block radius is all that got hit with our neighborhood being hit the hardest. We lucked out and only lost a bunch of big branches. But some homes had trees on them, etc... It's unreal. I was just beside myself. I was so worried about the kids. It took me an hour to drive 6 blocks because of street lites out, trees down, etc... It was the worst feeling not knowing if the kids were ok. Ugh. On a happier note, it was the coolest thing watching how everyone pitched in to help clean up. I loved it!! We are lucky and have electricity tonite. But a lot of our neighborhood doesn't and won't for days.

A neighbor's tree lying in our driveway. Our mailbox is underneath it.

Branches from a tree in our backyard, lying ontop of my garden. :(

The cul-de-sac we live in.

Isabel's primary teacher's home

Tree ripped completely from it's roots.

This is a picture of the roots of 3 trees intertwined. See how huge!?

This is the tree from the root picture above.

Wow! How scary. So glad everything turned out okay at your home. It's so great to see people pull together when faced w/something like that. The families who had trees fall on their houses - are they all okay?

I would have been freakin out. The pictures are really amazing. I wonder if our big tree out front is still standing? Crazy!

Robin- It's still standing. Your neighbor's fence blew over into your yard- they fixed it last nite. And branches fell off your tree. I didn't notice as much at your house because I was already freakin' out when I drove past it. I doubt your renters have electricity. The Smith's don't.

Gina called me last night and told me about the storm. That is so scary! I can't believe all the trees that are down! Do you know if the Turville's house is okay? I'll try to call Sebrina and let her know. I'm so glad you guys are okay. The hail damage on the siding and roof of your house is crazy!

Yikes. I can't imagine how scary that must have been, just trying to get home! I was at the dentist and missed it all (see my blog), but when I came home I COULD NOT believe the damage. Thank goodness no one was hurt. We finally have power back today (stayed at a hotel these past two nights - am i a brat?).
