Explaining Michael Jackson to a 12 yr old

Tristan and I were driving in the car talking about school. He mentioned there was a boy in one of his classes named Michael Jackson. Then he said, "But he's black." I was a little confused by this last statement. "Tristan, so is Michael Jackson the singer..."

"HE IS?!???!?!"

Now what do I say? How do you explain that the ugly white guy with a nose that's falling off was once the cool black guy who did "Thriller"??? Why must our sweet, innocent children be exposed to this?? And why would you name your kid "Michael" if your last name is Jackson?

hahha...that picture is stellar!

Hmmm, I don't know what to tell ya about Tristan. I would just tell him straight up. He will probably be confused and then laugh!

Awwwww. He used to be so cute once. My friends and I all had the hotties for him... but then, we were 12 at the time.

Same thing with naming a kid "Joseph" if your last name is Smith. JUST DON'T GO THERE.

Okay. So I like used to sit next to Michael Jackson in fourth grade. He was white. Painfully white. With big freckles and goofy teeth. He was the kind of kid who wore parachute pants but he wore them super baggy because he was still a nerd. He used to sign everything "Michale Jackson Says To Beat It!" and he'd draw a lame little studded glove. Yeah. He was weird. And yet I was the one the teachers thought was odd.

I still like Billie Jean and You Wanna Be Starting Something and PYT and Rock With You.
I can't help it.

Poor Tristan.

Hey, when I went to high school the following guys were on the team: Rhett Butler, Ronald McDonald, and Robin Hood. (Now really Ronald McDonald was the only one whose parents REALLY had an excuse--keep in mind McDonalds wasn't around until AFTER I was born) I think the best I've ever heard are: Rose Bush and the woman named Eileen who married the guy named Ben Dover--put it together ; )

The comment under that picture is priceless. Michael did use to be so cool. I was in high school and liked his music.

I'll take explaining how Michael Jackson takes pills and has medical procedures to lighten his skin over telling my child aobut oral sex, the president, and why he lied to the American people any day!

I am NOT touching the end (no pun intended) of Yvonne's comment! LOL

LOL! You know it's bad when you can't even be identified as a member of your race by the next generation.

I had a Michael Jackson in my 5th grade class.

I agree! Why is it that we have to explain to our children about all the crazy people in the world!?!

My son has a good friend named Michael. The other day I yelled out the door for them to come inside, "Michael, Jordan time to come inside." That was strange.

I guess it depends on how old Tristan is, maybe Michael Jackson was still black when he was born, or when his classmate was born....no, Michael's been white for a while. Nevermind.

The things we take for granted, Michael being black, children knowing that...

I LOVE the quote under the pictures, haha! :D

Ha! Thanks for the laugh, "but he's black" that is one to remember!

My sister had Michael's album, I was so green with envy. She would prop it up on her dresser...never put it away. He would just stare at me, and taunt me. Those were the days, before he/she/it was a freak.

I don't have any advice on that one but I do have a funny Michael Jackson story. One day on the way to school, the song Her Eyes by Pat Monahan came on. My oldest thought the lyrics were "she loved Michael Jackson up until he WENT bad" instead of "until he made Bad". Of course that is the same song that the youngest thinks says "She thinks all men are addicted to CORN" when he says "addicted to p0rn".

Michael Jackson was my first concert. The Victory Tour, it was called, with his brothers. I was in second grade. Also in second grade, I was Michael Jackson for halloween.

A month or so ago, li'l ~j. and I were listening to a Michael Jackson song in the car, and I was telling her about how big of a deal he used to be. She cut me off, "Wait -- this is a guy singing??"
